Setting the Reading Pane at the bottom and other display options in Outlook on the Web and OWA

In Outlook Web App (OWA), I prefer to have the Reading Pane at the bottom but since I have been upgraded to OWA on Office 365 (I'm not sure whether this is Exchange 2013 or Exchange 2016), my Reading Pane is on the right again and I can’t find a way to change that to the bottom.

In OWA 2010, this option was under a View button at the top of my message list where I could also disable Conversation View. In addition, I don’t want the message list to show the first line of the email either. I just want things back to the way I had it configured in OWA 2010.

How can I configure all this in Outlook on the Web of Office 365?

Empty Address Book and switching between Address Lists in OWA 2013

When addressing an email in OWA, I only see people from my own Contacts folder. However, I have plenty more Contacts in another folder and of course there is the Global Address List of our company with all the internal contacts.

The Contacts folder of my colleague is empty so opening the Address Book is currently completely useless to him.

How can I switch between all the address lists in my Address Book?
Is there also a way to change the default like you could in previous versions of OWA and within Outlook itself?

Search Folder support in OWA 2013

After my mailbox got upgraded to an Exchange 2013 server, I now have the new Outlook Web App 2013 layout as well for reading my emails in a browser. However, I’m now missing my Search Folders.

I’ve already tried to recreate and re-upload them via Outlook as I also had to do for OWA 2010 but my Search Folders are still not visible in OWA 2013.

How do I get access to my Search Folders again in OWA 2013?

Signature size limit in OWA

I'm working with both Outlook and Outlook Web App (OWA) and therefor want to configure the same default signature in both clients.

To do this, I opened the Signature Editor in Outlook and copied my signature text. Then I logged on to OWA and pasted the signature in the Signature Editor there. However, when pressing "Save Settings", I get the error:

The text you typed is too long. Please shorten it and try to save it again.

This made me wonder; Up to how many characters are allowed for the Signature in OWA?

Change default address list in Outlook on the Web (OWA)

In one of your previous tips, you mentioned how to set your private Contacts folder as the default when selecting the Address Book instead of showing the Global Address List first.

When I’m away from the office, I’m forced to use Outlook Web Access instead of being able to use Outlook.

Is there any way I can make this change in Outlook on the Web as well?

Do not automatically mark emails as Read in Outlook on the Web (OWA)

In the regular Outlook for Desktop, I’ve successfully disabled the option to automatically mark messages as read.

However, occasionally, I use Outlook on the Web (OWA) as well and it doesn’t seem to pick up the setting as configured in Outlook.

How can I prevent Outlook on the Web to automatically mark my emails as read?

Add a Shared Mailbox to your Folder List in Outlook on the Web (OWA)

Aside from my own mailbox, I’ve also added a couple of Shared Mailboxes to my Folder List in Outlook.

I also regularly use Outlook on the Web (OWA) and know how I can open another user’s mailbox, but can I also permanently add it to the Folder List on the left just like in Outlook?

Disabling or enabling Link Preview in Outlook 365 on the Web (OWA) and Outlook.com

When I type or paste an URL in my message in Outlook on the Web (OWA), some sort of preview is sometimes added with a logo and a description of the website or a still image of a YouTube video.

It looks OK but unfortunately, sometimes it doesn’t work and sometimes it is being added in the middle of my sentence after I’ve added an URL which is very awkward to say the least.

I now have the following questions about this feature;

  • How can I fix the links that didn’t turn into Link Previews?
  • How can I remove a Link Preview I don’t want?
  • How can I disable the Link Preview feature completely?

Shortcuts to Mail, Calendar and People in Outlook on the Web (OWA)

I've been using OWA for many year now to read my emails online and the layout changes with each version it seems. Switching to my Calendar or Contacts folder used to be in the bottom left, then it the top-right and now it is located in the top-left corner.

However, in the top left corner, I first need to click a button which then opens a menu from which I can select my Calendar or Contacts folder. This is an additional click and I regularly switch between these folders.

Can I somehow switch it back to the old layout again so these folders would only be a single click away?
