Can’t create file: VoiceMessage.wav

We’re using a voicemail system that sends our voicemail messages as emails with VoiceMessage.wav attachments. As of lately I can no longer open these voicemail messages anymore and get the following error when attempting to open it;

“Can’t create file: VoiceMessage.wav. Right-click on the folder you want to create the file in, and then click Properties on the shortcut menu to check your permissions for the folder.”

How can I listen to my voicemail messages again?

When you open an attached file directly from within Outlook, Outlook will create a copy in a (hidden) Temp folder on your hard disk first before an application can actually open it.

Outlook Temp folder is full

In certain circumstances this temp file is not automatically deleted after closing the attachment. When this happens for the 100th time for attachments with the same name, you’ll get the above error.

You’ll now first have to clean up the Temp folder before you can directly open attachments with that exact same name again (saving the attachment first and then opening will still work).

Location of Outlook Temp folder

As the location to the Temp folder is unique and also hidden, locating it on your computer requires a trip into the Registry;

Key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\<version>\Outlook\Security
Value name: OutlookSecureTempFolder

Copy the path mentioned in the OutlookSecureTempFolder value name and paste it into the Address Bar of Explorer or in a Run command to open it.

Extra tip: For easy access to the folder and to automatically clear it, you can also use the tool OutlookTempCleaner (free).
