Backward Looking P’s (¶) in Message

For some reason I click Reply to reply back to an email or even open another email up and I’ve got backward looking P’s (¶) all over my reply email and just one where I start typing in a new email. How do I remove these?

These are carriage returns. Press CTRL+SHIFT+8 to toggle to show markup.

Note that these characters do not show up at the receiving end.
